Southern states have always been kicked around by the federal government and have had their economies sacked twice: first in the War of Northern Aggression, and then due to globalization and the destruction of American manufacturing.

Devil's Advocate here: As a southerner, I have no problem draining the coffers of the oppresive federal empire. We already fought a war to leave and you didn't want to let us go. Now to you have to deal with it.Why should any oppressed people care what their conquers think?

Science is usually never the problem. It's the fact that another human is telling you something. Most people learn at an early age that people lie and distort/overstate/exaggerate the "truth".

I'm more inclined to think it has to do with their blood type. Japan is one of only two nations in the World where A is the dominate blood type. A type people tend to do well in large cities where living is crowded. Their culture also plays a role in it.
